Anne's List of Things I'm Grateful For, 2017

This year was certainly an interesting one in American politics. It was a challenge to keep determined and active around all of the issues I have an interest in. I set a reminder on calling and writing my representatives. I dedicated a monthly donations budget to my top charities - around civil rights, education, and women's health. And, I concentrated on very local issues, local fundraising, urgent needs and teaching. Still, it was difficult to ignore the news. We ended last year deeply disappointed in how many people seemed to abandon their neighbors. We haven't come far in recovering from the shock.

Still, what I'm most grateful for has been connections and growth. That's what I'm focusing on here in remembering the year. Friends and family, memorable connections, wise teachers, and continual learning have given me an opportunity to anchor in a compassionate, joyful and dedicated community. I've gained endurance from people who have endured. I've gained strength from humor. I've gained fuel from new creative challenges that help and inspire others, in the arts and in my career.

Practicing gratitude has made a difference, as well. It makes things easier. I'm glad someone noticed that and pointed it out, so I could benefit from it.
